Tony Saarem, GoMacro: Growth with Purpose
In 2004, Amelia Kirchoff and her daughter Jola Sonkin founded GoMacro, a vegan nutrition bar company, in Viola, WI. The products they created were based on the macrobiotic diet, which Amelia had converted to after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. By 2011, Jola and Amelia were struggling to meet demand for their product, and Tony Saarem, a Production Leader at Trane, was hired to lead operations. At the time, the company had five employees, and was manufacturing in the milk parlor of an old barn on Amelia’s property. Since then, GoMacro has grown to over sixty employees, been through multiple facility expansions, and sales have grown by 2500%. Managing this rapid growth and business expansion has given Tony the unique experience of building a staff, a manufacturing process, a benefits program, workplace policies, and a nationally recognized brand, from the ground up. Tony will share the story of GoMacro, how the principles upon which the business was founded continue to shape its future, and how GoMacro has found success in a rural village of 700 people. Tony also serves as the Co-Chair of the Wisconsin Organic Advisory Council.
